Beer and wine play a role in our family life, weekends are family days out and nights relaxing trying something new to drink and give an honest review. Like the character, “Jip” said in the classic 90’s coming of age film Human Traffic “the weekend has landed All that exists now is clubs, drugs, pubs, and parties”… well with that said…those days are long gone and being a parent I spend my time with the kids slipping in chunks of information into our conversations about life and growing up but with this new age of the superhighway thing (the internet) I get more info from my 7 year-old about what’s going on than I ever would 39 years ago from the local free paper
Without sounding like alcoholics, we aim to try a new beer or fancy artisan drink each week and write about what we thought of it and is it worth the price (If you would like to work with me mail me at [email protected])

Back in my adolescent days, I forgot to attend Uni (seriously I was supposed to start at Plymouth Uni but never attended) and worked for JD Wetherspoons pubs for 6 years, although I and my teams worked hard the shenanigans that went on in those pubs I will write about at a later date, but I still do love a beer and I hope I always can, I’m not meaning to get wasted but just to enjoy.
So, I hope this Info infuses you with that same passion I have these days….5 minutes for us and our beer.
I like a laugh, I like a beer, come to think of it a cider and if it’s right, a larger too (not the commercial ones!) when the sun is shining or the winter blues there is a beer for all seasons and if you have a recommendation or would like me to sample your beer and write about it email me at [email protected] to give yours ago or check out my instagram.com/beerawastedad for latest tastings.
Since the story of how Jesus turned water into wine, I have had an interest, well why wouldn’t you! I mean if you could be able to do this you would make masses of cash and live a happy life, just think the queues of people walking up to your door firstly to see this miracle and then to ask for a full-bodied Cab Sav! anyway, we can all dream
My Wife (and this is true) got me on to Wine, as a pub manager back in the day I spent my life boring people about different beers from larger to bitter, ale and international flavors but we also sold a shed load of wine.
Yes, we had our wine tasting but I never got it as the beer was my thing, then I started dating my now wife and shock! I had to act a bit sensible more knowledgeable and go out for meals (I say meals as we went to… well, one step up from Mac Ds as in, Nandos, Pizza express and Gastro Pubs although the odd restaurant did come into it.
Wine became our talking point and on the menus” Red or White?…. House or something better” I had to understand this new way of communicating and as I did, I didn’t want to screw things up.
We were DINKY’S at the time (Double Income No Kids) and did we know how to spend it if we had saved better our mortgage probably would be paid off by now but we had fun and the wine flowed like the Nile through Egypt and because of it we are now happily married and with our 4 monsters and our greyhound but what now.
As a parent, finding the best of a budget wine which is good is a challenge, I am always on the lookout for a good cheap bottle of plonk and I will be honest in my reviews as we have fallen into the cheap crap wine trap. So we have a world of wines sold to us from a Land of supermarkets and we will cross the borders from Reds, Whites & Rose to fizzy, sparkle and non-Alcoholic because as we learn we want to share with you, show me your vineyard and I will help with the harvest as well as try your wines, but come to think of it so is a great spirit?.
When it’s a freezing cold night on the coast, the onshore winds are battering the windows and the sound of the wind is screaming through the trees the rain pounds down onto the path and the grass is weeping under the weight of the water, well this is not to paint a picture of Poldark but more of the truth of a bleak winter on the coast.
To warm the house you have the fire burning, chunks of freshly cut log briskets slightly damp from the small crack in the shed where you store them warm the room with an undertow musty smell but that is overcome by the warming casserole simmering on the stove which tickles your nose as it gets closer to the time you get to dip your freshly made slice bread into it.
OK OK, this is about Spirits but I’m trying to get your imagination into the place where I go when having a Spirit.
Spirits to me are on these types on nights but yes on a hot summer day there is nothing better than a Hendricks Gin and tonic with ice & cucumber or a Pimms and lemonade with a farmer’s market bucket of fruit shoved into the jug.
When a special Spirit knocks at our door we will let them in and sample their black magic delights and I hope you will join us for a seance of the senses too.
public houses to wine bars, Freeholder to Wetherspoons, country pub to city bar these establishments are here for our leisure time, places where we can relax with our favorite tipple or something new.
We now have much so much choice as although many pubs have rung their bell one last time there is a new style to pubs and out with the old in with the new, owners, managers, companies are now changing there business models to bring in customers from food to board games, artisan spirits, and funky fruited beers and if you are lucky some pubs are brewing on site (like the good old Furkin pubs back in the day)
With Cask mask and CAMRA keeping the traditions going with training and testing, British pubs will turn around and change for the better and we can enjoy great Beer from a variety of pubs and bars and just not the local old cinema which is now a Spoons
