Popping into my local convenience store the other night, I came across something very special, firstly a great selection of wine at good prices for the quality (unlike the prices in the more commercial stores which add a couple of quid to a cheap ploke), secondly always a smile and banter from the team that work there (they know I’m a west ham supporter so always the butt of the jokes!).

Once I had had my fill of “lost again!” jokes I saw from the corner of my eye a wine which I had not seen for a while (probably as I try not to go to the large superstores these days so not increasing my carbon footprint).

The South African “The Secretary Bird” (named due to the quill-like feathers from the crest), this Merlot was on the shelf, I couldn’t say No, and I am glad I did not.

The last time I had tried this Wine I was camping with the family and friends, all under the stars on the Lizzard in Cornwall, a warm summer night (with a bit of a chilly wind) we drank, we talked we enjoyed.

This Weston Cape Merlot, very dark, very thick stings the taste buds with ripe red berries but softens them again with a smooth chocolate soother, bringing a well balanced full-bodied red wine and great with a BBQ’ed T-bone steak! and some biltong.
